About Us

Freelance Dramaturg Anne Hamilton - Bio

It is Anne Hamilton's joy and privilege to help writers, directors, and performers create new scripts and theatrical experiences. She also helps screenwriters to develop the stories of their dreams. 

She is the Founder of Hamilton Dramaturgy, an international consultancy based in New York City's professional scene, and located in Bucks County, PA. She has over twenty years of experience in the professional theatre in New York City, across the country, and internationally. Her clients have gone on to win the Pulitzer Prize, the MacArthur “Genius” Award, the Tony ® Award, and a Royal Court International Residency. In 2009, STAGE DIRECTIONS magazine named her a “trailblazer” in American dramaturgy. AMERICAN THEATRE magazine featured her TheatreNow! podcast in October, 2012.

Hamilton has consulted with Andrei Serban, the Joseph Papp Public Theater, the Harold Prince Musical Theatre Institute, Michael Mayer, Lynn Nottage, Yehuda (Judd) Ne'eman, Classic Stage Company, B.T. McNicholl,Tina Andrews, NYSCA, Jean Cocteau Repertory Theater, Leslie Lee, Andrew Barrett, Warren Bodow, Tom Cavanaugh, The New York City Public Library's Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture, and the University of Iowa Playwrights Workshop.

She worked for James Lipton (host and producer, INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO) for three years as the academic advisor to the graduate students and faculty at the Actors Studio Drama School
The Bogliasco Foundation of New York City and Bogliasco, Italy, awarded her a fellowship in recognition of her personal contribution to the American theatre. She studied the philosophy of aesthetics at St. Catherine's College, Oxford University, and British literature and history at St. Clare's Hall, Oxford. She was a NYSCA auditor for several years. Hamilton holds an MFA in Theatre Arts (Theatre Criticism and Dramaturgy) from Columbia University School of the Arts and is a dual citizen of the United States and Italy.

Kathleen Chalfant starred in her one-woman play AND THEN I WENT INSIDE at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City on November 9, 2009. An expanded version named THE STACY PLAY - A LOVE SONG - VOLUME I appeared in TRANSITIONS, a juried international Virtual Event at Pen and Brush, Inc., the prestigious women's arts collective. THE STACY PLAY also placed among the top 100 scripts of Writer's Digest magazine's 79th Annual Playwrighting Competition in 2010.

In March, 2011, Hamilton Dramaturgy Press published two anthologies of plays and poetry. AN- OTHER WHITE SHIRT And Other Plays and Poetry and THE STACY PLAY - A LOVE SONG - VOLUME I are now available through www.lulu.com. They include 29 new plays, including full-lengths, short plays, clown plays, and monologues.

Hamilton Dramaturgy's ScriptForward!, a specialty E-newsletter for professional scriptwriters, always provides helpful articles for arts collaborators.

Her popular podcast TheatreNow! features interviews with some of the most exciting female theatre artists working in America today. Guests have included: Quiara Alegria Hudes, Ruth Margraff, Claire Lautier, Kristin Marting, Valentina Fratti, Catherine Filloux, Yvette Heyliger, Yvonne Farrow, Kamilah Forbes Paule Constable, Fran Tarr, Rae Smith, Margo Jefferson, and Maria Alexandria Beech. Hamilton has published several articles in a series of Case Studies designed to help playwrights and directors understand exactly how a dramaturg can assist them in different projects such as staged readings, new play development, world premieres, etc. She has published four in ScriptForward! and Gary Garrison's E-magazine THE LOOP reprinted two of them, as well as several articles on playwrighting, and making the transition from college or graduate school to the professional world.
Hamilton's column "Page and Stage" appears in the BUCKS COUNTY WOMEN'S JOURNAL  She writes on plays and playwrighting for this educational newspaper. She also writes about Healing through the Arts for the Open to Hope Foundation's website.

She taught a playwrighting and screenwriting workshop at the 2011 Philadelphia Writer's Conference, and a session at the University of Omaha Nebraska's Dramaturgy Intensive in 2013. She has been a Guest Artist (Dramaturg) at the Great Plains Theatre Conference since 2012.

Hamilton is a member of the Dramatists Guild, Inc., Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas, The League of Professional Theatre Women, the UK Dramaturgs' Network, and Women in Stage Entertainment.
